A crimson beret is the highest form of distinction for members of the special forces of the National Guard of Russia troops who have passed difficult qualification tests. The right to wear this particular kind of beret is a recognition of the outstanding courage of a soldier and a subject of exceptional pride.

The exam that would entitle the soldiers to wear the crimson beret challenges their physical strength, stamina and willpower. In order to be admitted for the assessment, the candidates must serve for over a year, accomplish fitness testing and get a positive character reference from their superiors.

The crimson beret exam consists of two parts, each of them held on a separate day. The first day is dedicated to the theoretical part of the subjects studied in the special forces training school. It also includes the evaluation of firearms training and tactics. At the end of the day, the assessment committee rates the participants, and those who received a “good” mark and higher proceed to the next stage of the exam.

The second and most difficult day includes a 10-kilometer march through rugged terrain, an obstacle zone, shooting, assault of high-rise buildings, demonstration of acrobatic skills and hand-to-hand combat.
