The album dedicated to the coronation of the Emperor Alexander III and the Empress Maria Fyodorovna was put together and published in St. Petersburg 1885, two years after the ceremony. The circulation was only 500 copies in two languages, Russian and French. The album was designed as a gift to members of the Romanov family, the ruling houses of Europe, and top government officials.
The order to make and publish the coronation album was given to the Government Papers Procurement Service, an entity that was part of the Imperial Ministry of Finance. The writer Dmitry Grigorovich, who was then Head of the Artists Support Society, was in charge of the artistic design.
