The name refers to a legend rather than the ingredients. According to a legend, in ancient times there were birds of paradise. They fed their chicks with milk, although in reality birds do not produce milk. It is considered that any person who has drunk this milk will never fall ill and will become extraordinarily strong. The taste of these sweets from Orsk could therefore be described as heavenly.
The ‘Bird’s Milk’ sweets were produced at the sweets factory in Orsk, but they were famous throughout the whole Soviet Union and even abroad. The boxes were sent in parcels and purchased for presents for friends and relatives. The taste of ‘Bird’s Milk’ sweets was different from many other sweets available at that time. Often, ‘Bird’s Milk’ sweets were presented as a sign of gratitude, or bought for any special occasion, as a fine gift. The sweets’ popularity made them often hard to come by. For example, people would buy the Orsk sweets abroad whilst on business trips, in order to gift them later on. The sweets were also sent across the country.

Orsk also had a baking company operating in the city, which produced a variety of baked goods, cakes, waffles, biscuits and gingerbread. In the 1980’s, waffle praline cakes appeared on shop shelves. They were in high demand amongst local residents and remain well-loved to this day.
Between 1950 and 1980, nineteen businesses were built up in Orsk, having a huge impact on the city’s development and the population size.
The food industry changed the course of Orsk’s development. In 1962, a dairy plant was built in the city. Its products included bottled and unbottled milk, kefir, ryazhenka, clotted cream in glass bottles, sour cream in glass jars and unbottled and cream and chocolate ice cream. In the 1980’s, one liter bottles of milk started to be produced. The dairy plant was well equipped to provide for the city and the nearby region. All products were sold quickly after production, including a few varieties of milk, cottage cheese and cheese, kefir and butter.
