The Museum-Reserve houses a remarkable artifact — a 19th-century copy of the “View of Solvychegodsk”. The original was created by Afanasy Chudinov for the local historiographer Alexey Ivanovich Soskin in 1793.

This is a beautiful artistic image of Solvychegodsk made when its period of economic prosperity was already over, but the architecture and urban landscape of that time were still preserved. The city is depicted from the side of the Vychegda River, as if from a bird’s-eye view. The drawing is made using thin contours.

The artist depicted in detail all the stone parish churches, houses, fortified river embankments with sailing ships, multi-story wooden houses of the Stroganovs built around 1565, and even smaller structures such as a couple of windmills.

At the top, in the center, there is the coat of arms of Solvychegodsk which was approved in October 1781. In the bottom left and right corners, there are rectangular frames with the description of the view,

The view also included the description of the distance from Solvychegodsk to Chernigov and some historical notes,

Unfortunately, the location of Chudinov’s original work is unknown, and the museum displays a copy made by the Solvychegodsk citizen Pavel Semyonovich Likhachev. This panorama, despite a more naive style than that of famous St. Petersburg and European artists of that time, is a valuable example of late 18th-century Russian drawing.
