The purpose of the book, as stated in the introduction, is to give a general idea of how to create a comprehensive collection of engravings. The author stipulates that since it is impossible to know everything about engravings, he will focus on the subjects he is familiar with: workshops and galleries that he studied, and engravings of Italian, French, Flemish, Dutch, English and German schools. The publication includes copies of engravings from early printed books in original sizes. French language edition.

On the page, there is a caption under the picture that says, ‘A copy of the engraving from the book Ars moriendi; the copy differs from the others because the wine cellar doors are open’. Ars moriendi (The Art of Dying) are two Latin texts dating from about 1415 and 1450 that teach how to ‘die well’. The treatise Ars moriendi was among the first printed books.
The subject of the engraving is Non fis avarus (Do not be greedy). On his deathbed, the man is facing his friends and relatives, while a devil holds up a message that reads Prouidas amicis (Warning from friends), the other one says, Intente thesauro (Thirsty for wealth). At the bottom of the picture, there is a wine cellar, filled with barrels, and a stable where the horse is being led.
