Prince F.F. Yusupov and sons

In the early 20th century, an unknown photographer took a picture of prince Felix Yusupov with his sons Nikolay and Felix. The original is in the State Archive, and the museum houses a printed copy.

The younger Felix wrote in his memoirs that his father was not close to him and his brother:

There was always a distance in our relationship with my father. In the mornings and evenings, we kissed his hand. He knew nothing about our life. Neither my brother nor I ever had a heart-to-heart talk with him.

At the same time the son said that the marriage of his parents was happy: they did not marry out of duty, but for love. The family regularly traveled, visited their estates in the Crimea, and once the general even gifted his wife Mount Ai-Petri:

We had several estates in the Crimea. The two largest ones were in Koreiz, on the very coast <…> My father inherited Koreiz from his mother and was personally engaged in management and decoration. At one time he was fond of sculpture. He bought a large number of statues and covered the whole park with them. <…> Father’s fantasies sometimes took the most bizarre form. Like now I remember my mother’s surprise when my father gave her for her birthday Ai-Petri Mountain that towers over the southern coast, bald, rocky, the highest on the peninsula.

Serving in high military positions, Felix Yusupov Sr. also found time for hobbies. He enthusiastically participated in various amateur societies: he was a chairman of the Moscow Automobile Club, the Moscow Hunting Society, the Russian Society of acclimatization of animals and plants. The prince liked to communicate with dog breeders, bird breeders and even beekeepers. In many of these motley companies he took his children with him: ”…when my father brought me to their bee club, it turned out not to be scary at all. A hundred people gathered to welcome my father. They treated us to a delicious lunch, then staged a concert. Beekeepers sang soprano.”

One of Felix Jr.’s strongest childhood impressions was also associated with a visit to the poultry house:
#6
Sometimes my father would take us to see the priest who kept nightingales. Countless cages were hung from the ceiling. The priest would knock with instruments of his own making, and the nightingales would start singing. He waved his hands like a conductor, could stop, continue, and even tell them to sing in turns. I had never seen anything like it.
