Andrey Bogdanov
Book. Symphony on the Epistles and Revelation
#4
The work presented in the museum was written by historian, bibliologist, and bibliographer AndrEy BogdAnov in 1737. The full title of the book is ‘Symphony or Concordance, that is, agreement of fourteen Epistles of Saint Paul the Apostle, as well as all Collected Epistles and the Book of Revelation. Newly composed by Andrey Bogdanov, Imperial Academy of Sciences, printed at a typography.’

‘Symphony on the Epistles and Revelation’ is printed in black Cyrillic font on 309 sheets. The book has a leather binding, embossed on boards; the page text is arranged in two columns.

Not much is known about the author. He was born into the family of gunpowder manufacturer IvAn Bogdanov in Siberia. When his family moved to Saint Petersburg, Andrey Bogdanov enrolled at the gymnasium of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Later he helped his father until, by the decree of Peter I of 1719, he was assigned ‘to the service of the printing art’ - that is, as a printer to the Saint Petersburg Synodal Printing House.

After finishing his service, Andrey Bogdanov worked in the Saint Petersburg Printing House, and after 1727 in the Printing House of the Academy of Sciences. In 1730, he started working at the library of the Academy of Sciences. There, Bogdanov collected information about the construction of Saint Petersburg, studied archive documents, questioned the surviving witnesses of Peter’s construction site, and also described the incoming collections of manuscripts and printed books, proofread academic publications and compiled bibliographies for them.

This work took about twenty years and was completed in 1751, after which Andrey Bogdanov submitted the manuscript to the Academy of Sciences. He received 50 rubles for his work. “Symphony on the Epistles and Revelation” is a carefully compiled alphabetic subject index to the Apostolic “Epistles”, the only work published during the author’s lifetime.

The first surviving work by Andrey Bogdanov is the ‘Historical, Geographical and Topographic Description of Saint Petersburg from the Beginning of its Foundation, from 1703 until 1751’. In it, the author collected information on geography, toponymy, administrative structure and population of Saint Petersburg. This is basically an encyclopedia of life in the capital in the first half of the 18th century. However, the ‘Description’ was published only after the author’s death in 1779.
