At the turn of the 1920s-1930s, Ivan Bunin collaborated with ‘Sovremennye Zapiski’ (‘Contemporary Papers’) for a short time. The collaboration was quite fruitful, and the publishing house printed four Bunin books: the collection ‘Selected Poems’ of 1929, the only novel ‘The Life of Arseniev’, and two collections of short stories — ‘God’s Tree’ and “Bird”s Shadow”.
The “Selected Poems” book was very popular among readers. On May 22, 1929, prominent Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov published a positive review of Bunin’s work in the Berlin newspaper ‘Rühl’:
