A movie projector is an electrical device for displaying images on a screen. The UP-2 model on display was used to show silent movies recorded on a 16mm double perforation film. It was developed by a group of scientists led by Nikolay Gavrilovich Snezhko-Blotsky, a Soviet engineer and inventor.

The Kinap plant named after Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky and based in Odessa started producing this type of movie projectors in 1932. This enterprise specialized in cinema products: projectors using wide or narrow film, various types of movie screens, sound editing equipment, camera cranes and dollies, and many other times. It also produced the predecessors of the UP-2 projector: the UP-1 and the small UP-1 ½. Before the war, the Kinap had produced over 30,000 projectors.

The UP-2 projector was portable. It had a protective casing, as well as folding brackets for film reels. An evenly stretched piece of cloth or a smooth white wall could serve as a screen.

In addition to its primary entertainment function of showing films, the device was also used in schools or cultural institutions for broadcasting propaganda or educational movies. A zoom lens made it possible to adjust the image depending on the audience space and the size of the screen.

This movie projector had a number of other features: it could display the film backwards for 1.5–2 minutes (strictly no longer than that, otherwise the lamp would overheat), rewind the film, or go into the freeze mode.

The regular use required cleaning the parts that came in contact with a film — this helped to prolong its durability. Wear and tear affected the perforation most of all, which, in turn, could lead to the device shutting down and damaging the film.

The total weight of a full set of a movie projector, which included an empty reel, a cord, a rewind machine, and a casing, was about 7 kg. The disadvantages of movie projectors listed, among others, a rather noisy operation.
