The artist Anton Mikhailovich Zubov was born in 1907 in Stary Oskol. In 1925, after finishing the Stary Oskol secondary school, Zubov entered the Academy of Arts in Leningrad. After graduating from the Academy in 1930, Anton started working as a poster artist and illustrator for children’s literature in the Leningrad branch of “Izogiz” and “Uchpedgiz” publishing houses. During the same period, he visited the construction of the Dnieper hydroelectric power station.
From 1933 to 1936 Anton Mikhailovich taught the basics of fine arts and engineering graphics in the pedagogical and geological exploration technical colleges. On September 1, 1941, he volunteered to the front. For two wartime months before that he had drawn and worked a lot. “Kursk Pravda” published his drawings as early as July 8. He was an artillerist-observer in the war and drew whenever he had time. Zubov dreamed of creating a painting “Battle of Guard Artillerymen with Fascist Tanks”. The artist perished in the battle on September 8, 1942.
The painting “The Team Leader Dadykina with Her Team” shows a group of six women of different ages. The women are dressed in warm clothes — coats and headdresses (shawls and scarves). In the center, in front of the others, there is a full-face image of the team leader Dadykina. She has the Order of Lenin on her chest. Her hair is dark brown, her gaze is straight, her face is half-smiling and her lips are pressed together.
In the lower left corner of the painting is the artist’s signature and the date when the painting was created. The painting is executed using smooth impasto technique with individual brushstrokes and is mounted in a wooden frame made of laths painted in white.
For the Kursk region, the sugar production has always been a leading industry. It was in this sector that the Stakhanov movement emerged for the first time in the region’s history. This initiative emerged thanks to the labor achievements of the miner Aleksey Stakhanov. His exploits were taken up by the workers of other sectors and that is how this movement emerged in the country. A Stakhanovite from Kursk, Natalya Fyodorovna Dadykina, became famous all over the country. Her team collected 510 centners of sugar beet per hectare in 1935 and as much as 711 centners per hectare in 1936. At the All-Union meeting of Stakhanovites in the Kremlin Natalya Dadykina was awarded the Order of Lenin.
