Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and one of the oldest cities on earth. The first settlements appeared on its territory six thousand years ago, and later the city became the cradle of three major religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The status of Jerusalem remains a major point of contention between Israel and Palestine, each of which considers the city their undivided capital. The conflict has lasted for more than fifty years and involves a number of other countries.

Magomed Dibirov is a contemporary Dagestani artist, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Art and Restoration College. He expresses his civic position through his art and describes it as “social symbolism”. His works are known outside Dagestan, they are housed in state museums and private collections in Russia and around the world. Magomed Dibirov’s paintings are distinguished not for the artistic manner, but for their ideological content.

I focus on the message. Any artist can draw a beautiful tree, but not everyone can convey an idea. It is a priority for me.

The painting “Jerusalem” by Magomed Dibirov is part of the diptych “The Walls of Palestine”. The only surviving fragment of the Wall of the Temple Mount in Old Jerusalem is the main holy place of Judaism. The First and Second Temples of Jerusalem, the center of Jewish religion since the tenth century BC, were located there. According to tradition, God swore that this part of the wall would never be destroyed. The painting “Jerusalem” can be thought of as a pattern motif or the texture of walls built from stones of various shapes, broken during the military siege. The color scheme of the painting is close in color to the natural Jerusalem stone, which is also called biblical stone.

The drawing is composed of three geometric shapes: a circle in which a crescent moon can be seen, a square in which a cross can be inscribed, and a triangle, which easily transforms into a Star of David. In the language of encrypted symbols, the pattern speaks of three religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The patterns are broken off at the edges of both paintings, which may signify an endless struggle.
