At the beginning of 1946, Pavel Petrovich Bazhov was registered as a candidate for the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was included in the lists of candidates from the Krasnoufimsky electoral district. He went on an almost three-week trip in January and February to meet with voters.

Bazhov visited Polevskoye, Manchazh, Sazhino, Nizhniye Sergi and other settlements. On January 29, he went to the Arti Mechanical Plant. In the village’s club, factory workers presented the deputy with gifts: a souvenir scythe and a homemade tablet, or a board with inserts, demonstrating the process of making a sewing needle.

Real machine needle blanks needed at different stages of production were fixed on the tablet. The writer treasured this artifact very much.

Pavel Petrovich liked to display this gift, which at first glance did not contain anything special, and always provided commentary: ‘After all, they knew what to give! It’s small in size, but it’s nice. Take a look — and imagine what the workers are doing… One would think, what’s so special in a needle? But it is not an easy thing!

In the autumn of 1941, the Arti plant, which had been producing agricultural scythes for more than 130 years, received the needle production equipment from the Mikhail Kalinin Plant in Podolsk, as well as its staff — 248 workers with families. At that time, it was the only such enterprise in the USSR. Needles were needed both for the front and for the rear. The products were supplied for footwear, clothing, and knitting industries. Needles were used for sewing parachutes, and covers for tanks and “Katyusha” rocket launchers.

After the war, the needle workshop was moved to Arti. When Bazhov was presented with this gift, the factory was the only one in the country producing industrial sewing needles. From the 1960s until the collapse of the USSR, the number of manufactured products was very large, the factory had its own inventors and cooperated with other countries, for example, with Czechoslovakia and the GDR. So, the number of workshops and, accordingly, the factory staff increased.

In the 21st century, the workshops producing scythes and needles were officially separated. Currently, the needle factory is called “Arti Needles”.
