“After graduating from the university, I started working very hard. I went to paint to the Morozov Hospital, almost by chance. I was asked to paint the portrait of one famous surgeon and I got carried away. I painted him and started working at other paintings as the subject appeared very interesting to me from the point of view of plastic expression as well as from that of human character. I don”t really know what fascinated me: the children, the nurses, the doctors, the interiors… I started painting hospital scenes, and now, more than 50 years later, I can say that my style of painting has not changed at all. It was at those times that my style formed, the way I wish to see my works. Planar, monolithic, full of lighting nuances”.
From Tatyana Livshiz’s memories.

In the painting, we can see the doctors that worked at the Morozov hospital at those times. In the light of a desk lamp, they are filling in documents at the end of the day. In the background, there is a window that looks out onto the hospital ward where, in one of the beds with high boards, a little patient is sleeping. Across another bed, there is a long string with rattles. As we can see, that ward is for babies.

Tatyana Livshiz conveyed the hospital atmosphere through the colour palette. She chose dimmed cool tones: white and blue. Even the light from the desk lamp does not look warm.

The Morozov hospital was founded in Moscow at the beginning of the 20th century by the philanthropist Alexei Morozov who came from an old dynasty of merchants. He inherited the funds for its construction from his father, entrepreneur Vikula Morozov.
By 1906, the hospital included 9 treatment blocks, living quarters for doctors, a chapel and household buildings. Here, infectious diseases were treated, vaccinations against smallpox were done and operations were carried out. In the years of the First World War, wounded soldiers were brought here.

After the Revolution, the Morozov hospital was renamed and became the City Model Children’s Clinical Hospital №1. Several new departments and a school for nurses opened in it. During the war, a kindergarten appeared here.
