I.I. Mashkov and His Wife M.I. Mashkova

In the photograph, there are Ilya Mashkov and his wife Maria in the artist’s workroom. It was located in the building of the Polytechnic Society at 4, Maly Kharitonevsky Lane, Moscow.

Mashkov equipped his workroom in 1906 according to his project. He lived and worked in it until his death, that is, until 1944. Here, rather than elsewhere, he painted most of his paintings. There, the modernist art association “Jack of Diamonds” (also called “Knave of Diamonds”) held its board meetings. The workroom was visited by Vladimir Mayakovsky, Anatoly Lunacharsky, Vladimir Lenin, Vsevolod Meyerhold.

This is the place, where Mashkov’s students studied. They left many memories about the workroom.

When you open the door, you immediately feel warmth. A large brick stove, brightly glowing, homelike warms the tall, big and bright workroom. In the center of the workroom, there is a mighty athletic figure of Mashkov in black underpants with his legs ridiculously twisted, which immediately caught my eyes. The artist picked up a two-pound weight and, throwing it up, dropped it on the floor (these sounds were heard even out of the workroom). All across the walls near the vases with flowers there were hung bright still-life paintings, landscapes, artist’s model with green highlights and red cheeks, big jugs, breads, watermelons with black seeds. Naked strong youths and girls among huge flowers carried huge fruitages, as a symbol of abundance, across the painted canvases. The workroom was filled to the brim with working men and women students. Some rubbed paints with a pestle (paint grinding stone) on the glass, others sawed and planed boards, making stretchers, and the other ones stretched canvases and primed them with large brushes.

Artistry alternated with sports. That was a reason why there always was sports equipment: gymnastic rings, weights, and dumbbells.

’Mashkov forced his students to do sports every day and even taught them wrestling techniques to unite and temper. The poster “It is strictly forbidden to get sick!” always hung on the wall in the workroom, ” another Mashkov’s student recollected, whose name was Andrey Goncharov.

Maria Mashkova, nee Danilova, who is depicted in the photograph, was the artist’s third wife. They married in 1922. It was Maria who transferred the majority of Mashkov’s paintings to the collection of the Volgograd Museum after her husband’s death. The collection includes 38 paintings and 60 graphic works from the 1900s–1940s.

Mashkov taught Maria to paint. Two still-life paintings from the museum collection are signed with two names: Mashkov and Mashkova. Moreover, sometimes Maria created compositions for her husband’s still-life paintings.
