Archdeacon Stephen, the Protomartyr

The Archdeacon Stephen is the first Christian martyr. Legend says that twelve Apostles nominated seven respectable men as deacons, i.e. their aides. Stephen was among the elected ones and was designated as Archdeacon, chief aide.
The sermons of Stephen always attracted many attendees. This stoked anger with representatives of another strain of Christianity – the Pharisees. One day they captured the deacon and led him to the Supreme religious court – Sanhedrin. At the hearings the Pharisees brought false witnesses who made a claim that in his sermons Stephen abuses God and Prophet Moses. With his vindicatory speech the deacon even more infuriated all those who were present at the court. Then he was grabbed, forced out of the town and stoned. Thus he became the first martyr.

Earlier the image of Stephen from the collection was a northern portal of the deacon’s doors of the iconostasis. In the church it was to the left from the Sanctuary doors. Through it the clergy passed to the altar where they prepared the holy sacraments for rituals, namely, bread and wine. Stephen, the Protomartyr, is often depicted on the northern doors, on the southern door leaf he is paired with the Archdeacon Lawrence.
The presented image was painted by unknown craftsman in early XVIII century. He worked in the traditions of the Armory Chamber. Iconographers of this school attempted to emulate the art of Western Europe. Instead of flat figures and images of Saints they are depicted as dimensional, this attributed the properties of mimetic representation to the images.

Besides, the craftsmen of the Armory school, in addition to tempera, started using vanishes – semi-transparent paints that enabled to attain new tints. The Arch-priest Habakkuk was against such style calling the images not pious.

The unknown author depicted the deacon in accordance with the conventional iconography. The author captured a beardless adolescent with long hair cascading down to the shoulders. Stephen is appareled in a surplice – a long vestment with dolman sleeves. On the left shoulder he has a maniple – a narrow silk band. The detailed image of clothing with ornament and jewelry was also typical for iconographic school of the Armory Chamber. The craftsman used bright colors in his composition. He painted St Stephen in gold embroidered garments against a contrast green-brown background.
