Icon of the Martyrs of the Ipatiev House
#2
The icon depicts the martyrs of the Ipatiev House and the Alapayev Mine, canonized members of the royal family, who were brought to the Urals in 1918 and soon executed. The icon was painted especially for the museum in memory of the members of the Russian Imperial House.

In the initial early version of the icon, all the characters were depicted with halos, since all who perished were glorified in sainthood by the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in 1981. However, a modified version of the icon was later created (its copy with changed details). On it, only the members of the imperial family who were canonized by the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1992, 2000 and 2016 had halos. On the left and right sides of the icon, a text from the Apocalypse is quoted.

In the spring of 1918, Nicholas II, his wife, children and some members of retinue were sent to Yekaterinburg, where other members of the royal family were imprisoned by this time. The emperor’s family and servants were placed in the requisitioned house of engineer Nikolai Ipatiev. The prisoners spent the last months of their lives here. In July 1918, they were executed by shooting.
The left side of the icon shows the killed members of the imperial family: Nicholas II, Alexandra Feodorovna, their daughters and Tsarevich Alexei. At their side, the figures of the family doctor Yevgeny Botkin, who went in exile with them, the lackey of Nicholas II Aloise Trupp, cook Ivan Kharitonov and the Empress’ maid Anna Demidova. All of them were killed along with the royal family, in the basement of the Ipatiev house.

On the right side of the icon, the Romanovs and members of their retinue who died in the Alapayev mine are depicted. They arrived in the city in May 1918. At first, the prisoners’ life was relatively free, they were allowed to write letters, go to walks in the vicinity of the school under the supervision of guards, and attend church. However, a month later the regime was tightened: they were forbidden to send letters or travel to the city, their food ration was reduced, and their personal items and money were taken away. The military team often arranged unexpected searches and night checks. The members of the Romanov dynasty and representatives of their entourage were killed on the night of July 18, 1918. Their bodies were dropped in one of the mines in the vicinity of Alapayevsk.
