Icon of Our Lady Joy of All Sorrowing
#2
The name of the image Joy of All Sorrowing is the first line in one of the hymns in praise of the Virgin. The researchers deem that this storyline does not have a single canonic scheme of execution, it exists in a multitude of options. For instance, in early versions no seekers were painted around Our Lady; they appeared only after the icon was glorified having committed a miracle.
According to the legend, it happened in 1688. At that time thanks to the prayer before this icon in Moscow Church of Transfiguration the whole blood sister of Patriarch Joachim, Effie, was cured from severe illness. Afterwards the diseased started arriving to pray before the icon and the mourners sought consolation from all over Moscow and according to the legend Our Lady helped many of them.

The icon from the collection was created by unknown craftsman at the end of XVIII century in the city of Nevyansk – a large old believer’s iconographic center. The artist executed the image on a golden background and the faces were depicted very naturalistically. Such stylistics was characteristic of the works of craftsmen of the Armory Chamber.

The author painted Our Lady in full size, in royal attire. On her head she wears a crown, and under it is a white mantle. The Virgin is appareled in a dark-blue chiton and wine coloured omophorion – a long feminine coverlet. In her right hand she holds a baton which symbolizes power and dignity. In her left hand – Infant Jesus. On his head he has a crown. He is dressed in a blue chiton and folded in himation (mantle) of coral color. The artist built a bright festive color scheme on a blend of different tints of red and dark-blue. The craftsman drew a special attention to detailed painting of paradisal flowers to both sides of the Virgin – they symbolize blessing.
The Virgin and Jesus are surrounded by the seekers soothed by Angels. The craftsman supplemented their images with scrolls. They describe mercifulness which Our Lady bestows to all those who seek her help: to the mourners – consolation, to the naked – clothing, to the hungry – food. Traditionally, in the upper corners iconographers depicted sun as an image of glory of Divinity and Moon as an image of visible world. However, on this icon instead of them the craftsman depicted two faces. To the left – Our Lady of Tikhvin and to the right – the hieromartyr Maxim.
