Letter of grant issued to Pankrat Nechaev

Letter of granting votchina in Atemar and Saransk Regions to nobleman Pankrat Vasilevich Nechaev was delivered to the Museum of Local History of the Republic of Mordovia in 1920s. This document is of great historical importance as only several similar letters have remained in Russia. Noblemen could receive a letter of grant only for special merits before their Motherland and bravery in military campaigns.

On the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Nechaev family was one of the most famous noble families owning estates in Saransk and Atemar regions. The Nechaevs derived from the Pleesheevs and the Moskotinyevs and mentioned in parts II, III, and VI of the genealogy book of Kostrova, Moscow, Saratov, and Simbirsk provinces.

Pankrat Vasilevich Nechaev was one of the most prominent representatives of his noble family. He participated in the Russo-Polish War of 1654 – 1667 in the rank of a sotnik and he was also a bearer of news as he delivered joyful information about victories to the capital. He distinguished himself in the famous Battle of Konotop in 1659 where he fought under the command of Prince Alexey Trubetskoy. Though the Russia army had to retreat, the battle near the city of Konotop was of great historical importance as Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky was soon defeated. Pankrat Nechaev served in the regiment of voevoda Prince Yury Nikitich Baryatinsky during the revolt of Stenka Razin, he was seriously injured in 1670 but survived.

On February 17, 1673, Pankrat Nechaev received a letter of grant in which, besides the enlargement of his estate, the tsar granted him some land in patrimony as his votchina. The nobleman received the letter of grant after signing a peace treaty with the Poles due to which Russia received some Polish lands. This document enumerates all merits of Pankrat Nechaev, praises his ‘services, deeds, and bravery’ and lists all lands granted by the tsar.

In 2018, the letter was restored on the occasion of the centenary of Museum of Local History of the Republic of Mordovia. Experts of All-Russia Art Research and Restoration Centre performed restoration in Moscow during one year and a half. The museum received monetary funds necessary to restore the letter of grant under the program Culture of Russia.

Besides this valuable historical document, the collection of Museum of Local History of the Republic of Mordovia contains a patterned silk cloth used to wrap the letter and a twisted cord with the tsar’s seal.
