In 1917, Nicholas II and his family were exiled in Tobolsk. Initially, the royal family members were treated with reverence and could use some luxuries. For example, from Tsarskoye Selo the Romanovs got a Thorens gramophone complete with several discs.

The gramophone was made in Switzerland at the beginning of the 20th century. There is a spring motor inside its lacquered wood body. On top of the body there is a turntable where they put on discs. The instrument design also includes a tone arm with a needle and a tin horn to amplify the sound. The device mechanism has the manufacturer’s nameplate, namely, an equilateral cross with an anchor and an inscription saying THORENS SWISS MADE FABRICATION SUISSE.

The Thorens Company was established in Switzerland in 1883. It was founded by the Swiss businessman and mechanic Herman Thorens. Initially, the company produced watches and music boxes. In 1903, the range of its products included phonographs that were the first devices to make and playback audio records. They reproduced the device invented by Thomas Edison in 1887.

In 1906, the Thorens Company started to produce horn gramophones. Such an instrument belonged to the Romanov family. At that time, gramophone discs were made from natural resin known as shellac. A spiral sound track was made on their surface with a special cutter. When the gramophone needle moved along such a groove, it began to vibrate. The vibrations were transmitted to the sound box, and the device reproduced the sound recorded on the disc.

Shellac gramophone discs were short-lived: the material they were made from was as fragile as glass, and the sound track eroded quickly under the needle. However, such discs were popular until the middle of the 20th century, when they were replaced by stronger and more durable vinyl discs.

In addition to audio devices, they produced harmonicas, razors, lighters, and even skiing kits under Thorens trademark at different times.
