Amedee Ozenfant
Graphics on a Black Background

#2
The painting by Amedee Ozenfant “Graphics on a Black Background” belongs to the period of the rise of purism. Ozenfant was its leader (together with architect Le Corbusier) and theoretician. Purism, directly related to constructivist architecture, was based on absolute veneration of geometry. Its goal was the maximum simplification and clarification of forms and the depiction of “primal” elements.

About the choice of the objects
#5
In his painting, Ozenfant depicted standardized objects: conventional ceramic and glass dishes. The choice of goods produced by a machine is very typical for purists. In their articles, they noted that such objects related to “a human being as a geometrical creature”, who is able to rebuild the social reality based on “economy and rationalism”.

About the constructivism
#7
Almost turning the schematization of object shapes into abstraction, the artist projects their facile silhouettes onto the evenly painted black plane, so that all of them belong to different spatial zones. At the same time, Ozenfant is still interested in object functionality. Purist principles were partly implemented in constructivist design and architecture, including works by Le Corbusier.
