Gorokhovets has always been famous for the wealth of forests, and the carpentry was the main craft of the menfolk. The toys were made by the local carpenters, whose fame was so great that Vladimir Ivanovich Dahl, one of the greatest Russian-language lexicographers, even gave them a separate name in the Explanatory Dictionary of the Live Great Russian Language — Yakushas — after the name of the village where they lived — Yakushevo.
These were the talented ‘slotters, carpenters, woodcarvers for the artistic carving of the log huts and ships’. The masters were keen to put all their skill and invention into the toy.
These toys were made exclusively for the fun of children. Only a few have survived. Most likely, this is due to the fact that no one took them seriously, did it in a hurry, gave it to children for games and fun, and when the children grew up, the toys became unnecessary or broken, they were simply thrown away.
