Yakut artist Victor Petrov painted The Lena picture in 1970. He depicted the main waterway of the Republic – the Lena River. It is not only the central artery but also a sacred symbol for the culture of the Sakha people. Local residents have created songs, sagas and legends about its beauty and greatness.
Petrov’s main source of inspiration was the nature of Yakutia. He reminisced: “When I got my own family, we would constantly travel to the Lena, en plein air, we lived in tents, had a motor boat. Hunting and fishing. Vladimir Mayakovsky compared his native Georgia with Eden, heaven on earth. For me, such a place was Alas Byrdahtaah. My art stems from there”. In his artworks, he aspires to show the beauty of native land to the whole world.
The author depicted the river’s wide overflow and steep bank. In the foreground, you can see the Lena Pillars – oblong stone rocks, whose height can reach 70 meters. They stretch as a solid wall for more than 40 kilometers along the right bank of the Lena River. This unique natural phenomenon is compared with majestic colonnade, towers, arches and cathedrals.
Petrov painted The Lena in the genre of a picturesque landscape. He intentionally generalized the objects’ contours and color spots’ boundaries. The artist worked with free and wide brushstrokes and used bright saturated colors to create on canvas an illusion of light and air. The open panorama of the river running away, high skyline and festive color palette give birth to a sense of exultant joy of living.
With the help of miniature and barely visible details, the painter ‘livens up’ the landscape. For example, in the center of the painting, against the crags there is a thin blue stream of bonfire smoke and a group of people standing near it. And in the distance, you can see a cargo barge sailing along the river.
Petrov dedicated a large number of artworks to the Lena. He perceived the river as a special world that is flowing and changing. Therefore, each of his new pictures on the Lena theme does not resemble the previous. The master used complicated color solutions and tried to achieve to a certain atmosphere with his compositions depending on the season and time of day. In such a way, the artist aimed to express the unique beauty of his native land and show it to the whole world.
