Rostislav Kushlyansky was born on May 15, 1908 in Odessa. This Ukrainian town on the sea was where he finished seven grades of a local school alongside workers’ faculty. He dreamt of a military career and therefore joined the Red Army after finishing school. When Rostislav Kushlyansky turned 30, his father was reprised for his origin. Rostislav himself did not face reprisals, but had no right to continue his service because he was a grandson of the tsar’s general.
A year later, Rostislav Kushlyansky managed to return to the army. He was the first sergeant of the 21st Defensive Battery based in Odessa for nearly a year, starting in October of 1940. He took part in hostilities of the Second World War, beginning in June of 1941. Kushlyansky was on artillery duty, defending Odessa from the German barbarians. In 1942, he was invited to Komsomol. When a platoon of the guard was under Rostislav Nikolaevich’s command, he demonstrated his dauntless courage in the Battle of Kursk.
In July of 1943, Rostislav Kushlyansky’s platoon repelled ten fierce assaults of the enemy near the village of Sheino, breaking out their encircled position. When one of the artillery pieces was destroyed by hostile fire, the commander took control of another weapon himself.
After five days of battle, the platoon suffered heavy losses, but the enemy had no intention of retreat. Contrarily, the enemy sent a group of tanks, including highly dangerous Tigers, after launching a fierce airstrike against the Red Army. These heavy weapons were followed by automatic riflemen.
This time, the enemy forces managed to best the Red Army soldiers. Rostislav Kushlyansky and two of his warriors survived after that ferocious attack. They managed to damage three Tigers and repel the German infantry. Their chances of survival were extremely low, but they were covered with fire of the neighbouring battery’s artillery men. Defending himself from fascists by shooting, Rostislav broke out of his encircled position.
Our soldiers managed to destroy twenty German tanks and forty motor vehicles. Information about the feat of a Komsomol member and his soldiers quickly spread across the division.
The Komsomol member was awarded the honorary title of the Hero of the Soviet Union for his combat heroism. Kushlyansky was also awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Patriotic War, as well as a couple of medals. After the end of the war, he commanded a squadron in the Naval Military Academy of his home city. Rostislav Nikolaevich worked in Odessa’s nautical college, and also was a navigator on a motor ship. He passed away in 1980.
The village of Melikhovo, the place of his feat, has a street named after him.
