Heinrich Buntzen
The Palace in the Park
#2
The Place in the Park was painted by Danish artist Heinrich Buntzen as a match to the Landscape with the Castle, created in the same 1870. Both canvases are in the collection of the Stavropol Museum of Fine Arts.

Both these paintings belong to several types of landscape, i.e. architectural, historical, as well as palace-and-gardens. The Palace in the Park by Buntzen presents Fredensborg Slot, which means ‘the palace of peace’ in Danish. He painted a part of the royal park with the view on the palace on a summer sunny day.

Fredensborg is a palace on the eastern shore of Lake Esrum on the island of Zealand. It is the Danish Royal Family’s spring and autumn residence. The palace is located 30 km away from Copenhagen, in a settlement near the Fredensborg station.

Fredensborg Palace was built in the style of French baroque. The residence was designed by architect Johan Cornelius Krieger, royal gardener, on a request by King Frederick IV. The King himself took an active part in the planning of the building and palace gardens and closely watched the construction process. The palace complex consists of a square, 1 ½-storey building with a dome. It is positioned at the centre of what is known as a ‘hunting star’, a number of straight intersecting paths in a game hunting reserve. In front of the main building there was an octagonal courtyard encircled by single-storey buildings. The design envisaged stables, a large conservatory and chapel.

The Palace was inaugurated on October 11, 1722, King Frederick IV’s 51st birthday. Since than it was extended throughout the early 18th century, however it has preserved its main structure. The Fredensborg Gardens, designed by Krieger, have also changed during the centuries. Nowadays, they are one of the largest gardens in Denmark with the territory of about 300 acres, i.e. over 120 hectares.

The residence of the Danish kings is tightly linked with the Romanov Royal Family. It has rooms where Russian heirs to the throne and Emperors stayed — Grand Duke Nicolay Alexandrovich, Alexandre III (he stands against the background of this palace in his famous portrait by Russian artist Valentin Serov), and Nicolas II. One of its halls is called Russian, because of the pieces of art linked with Russia.

Buntzen painted the palace and garden complex in the historical period when the ties between the Russian Empire and Denmark were the closest. In 1866, Danish Princess Dagmar arrived to Russia. She was to become wife of Grand Duke Alexandre Alexandrovich, who later became Emperor Alexandre III, and mother of Nicolas II, the last Russian Emperor. This explains why the paintings with this particular residence ended up in Russia.
