The Museum of Intelligence Officer Nikolai Ivanovich Kuznetsov displays a copy of a photograph depicting the graduating class of the seven-year secondary school in Talitsa. Nikolai Kuznetsov was born in 1911 in the village of Zyryanka, near the town of Talitsa. In the fall of 1924, Nika’s father brought him to Talitsa, where the only seven-year secondary school in the area was located. The boy enrolled in the sixth grade. As he saw his son off, Ivan Kuznetsov calmly but earnestly gave him final instructions: not to neglect his studies, to uphold discipline, and to remain honest in all things. “If you follow the truth, you will find happiness,” he told Nika. “Courage… it begins with truth”.
In Talitsa, Nika was first placed with the Prokhorov family; when he entered the seventh grade, he moved in with the Maslovs. The seven-year school, where Nikolai Kuznetsov studied, left a profound mark on his life. The school’s headmistress, Anna Zinovievna Snegireva, described him as follows: “A calm and promising boy — well prepared for school, remarkably attentive, and full of spirit”.
Nina Nikolaevna Avtokratova, who taught German, played a special role in shaping his future. Educated in Switzerland, she was fluent in both German and French and placed particular emphasis on conversational practice. Kuznetsov’s classmate Sofya Bruskova recalled: “Nina Nikolaevna asked the students to speak only German during recess. Few succeeded — and among them was Kuznetsov”.
At school, Nika actively participated in amateur theatrical performances and was accepted into the Young Pioneer organization. Everyone who knew him remembered him with warmth and admiration. Their recollections paint the portrait of a young man endowed with a rare combination of intellectual gifts and exceptional human qualities.
One of Nika’s most striking traits was his phenomenal memory. Classmates were amazed by his ability to absorb and retain vast amounts of information — whether foreign languages, historical dates, or technical details. He handled knowledge with ease, demonstrating deep understanding and insight. Another quality consistently noted by those who knew him was his diligence and readiness to help others. Tireless in both study and work, Nika never shied away from challenges and always strove for excellence. His perseverance and determination became an example to his peers.
Finally, his classmates unanimously praised his kindness and openness. Nika was sincere, responsive, and always willing to listen and understand others. He had a natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life and quickly earned their trust. Classmates described Kuznetsov as a young man of outstanding intelligence, strong character, and a kind heart. He was not only a gifted student — he became a true friend and left an indelible impression on everyone who knew him.
