The photo shows Robert Rozhdestvensky speaking at a meeting with the Talmenka residents (an urban-type settlement) during the “Soviet Literature Days in Altai” festival dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the formation of the USSR. The photo was taken in 1972. At the time, a group of writers, among them Rozhdestvensky, were on a trip to Talmensky district for a few days. Artistic evenings and meetings with local workers were part of the program.
There were six routes in total, which the teams of writers followed within the festival. The routes also included forest and mountainous areas of the Krai. Valentin Rasputin, Pavel Nilin and David Kugultinov were part of the writers group headed by Rozhdestvensky. In total, as many as 200 meetings with writers took place in Altai Krai during the “Soviet Literature Days in Altai” event.
Furthermore, a significant event took place during the festival, which then became part of the local history. A meeting was organized near the Barnaul-Novosibirsk highway not far from Srednesibirskiy village and gathered hundreds of local residents. Writer Sergei Grokhovsky brought a capsule with hallowed ground from the village of Khatyn, known for the mass burning of 149 civilians by a fascist death squad on March 22, 1943. There were 75 children among the dead.
A tractor slowly drove across the field to sound of the orchestra. Sergei Grokhovsky walked behind the tractor, taking the ground from the capsule and scattering it. At that very moment, Robert Rozhdestvensky got out his notebook and noted down:
