In the summer of 1899, Chekhov had yet another worthy reason to visit Moscow. It was an overwhelming feeling for the Moscow Art Theater actress Olga Leonardovna Knipper. Their first meetings date back to 1898. They met at rehearsals of the plays ‘The Seagull’ and ‘Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich’. Knipper’s heroines in both performances were called Irina. Later Chekhov wrote: “If I stayed in Moscow, I would fall in love with this Irina.”
The next year, on April 12, Anton Pavlovich came to Moscow again. A week later, on April 18, he paid an unexpected visit to Olga Leonardovna. They later visited an exhibition of Levitan’s new paintings.
