Nikolai Filippovich Serdyukov was born in 1924 in selo (rural locality) Goncharovka of the Oktyabrsky District. In august 1942 Nikolai was drafted into the army; he received the rank of Junior Sergeant. He participated in battles against the Army Group of E. Manstein, and then in the defeat of the surrounded troops in Stalingrad. In January 1943 in the area of Stariy Rogachik his company was advancing through the open space, crossing minefields and wire barriers. Junior sergeant N. Serdyukov supported the offensive with machine-gun fire. He was wounded in the leg, and then his machine-gun was put out of action by a frag. He took grenades and crawled to the enemy machine-gun pillbox. He threw all the grenades, fired a long burst of bullets, but missed and the enemy machine-gun kept firing. After that he got up, rushed to the pillbox and closed the machine-gun with his body. Nikolai sacrificed his life so that the men of his company could attack and capture the enemy position. Nikolai Serdyukov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. There is a street named in his honor in Krasnoarmeysky district.
