The photograph “Trading House “Nikita Bogarsukov and Sons” dates back to 1908. It was donated to the Felitsyn Museum by a resident of Krasnodar, who wished to remain anonymous. The photo was found during repairs in an old house: the picture had been hidden under the boards.
The picture was made by a popular photographer of that time, Afanasy Chernov. His studio was opened in 1884 on Medvedovskaya Street (now it is Kirov Street). Over the years, Chernov captured several important events in the history of Kuban and Russia: visit to Ekaterinodar (today — Krasnodar) of Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna, the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Kuban Cossack Host, the visit of Nicholas II to Kursk. In 1899, Afanasy Chernov received the title of Supplier of the Court of Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich.
The photo features 56 employees of the trading house, which belonged to the Kuban merchant Nikita Bogarsukov. The men wear formal suits with ties or bow ties. There is a signature under each portrait — the last name and initials of the person in the photo. There are portraits of Nikita Bogarsukov himself and three of his six sons in the center of the picture. These images are larger than the rest.
Nikita Bogarsukov did not receive any institutional education, but from an early age, he was engaged in trade and quickly became rich. He moved to Ekaterinodar from Armavir with two brothers — Karp and Christopher. There the Bogarsukovs built the hotel “Central” and a two-story red brick building — the Krasnodar Museum named after E. D. Felitsyn is now located in this very building. And in 1894, the trading house “Nikita Bogarsukov and Sons” was opened in Ekaterinodar. Soon this company became one of the largest and most successful enterprises in the Russian Empire. It traded in manufactured goods, mainly fabrics. In addition, the Bogarsukovs had ready-made dress stores in Ekaterinodar and Novorossiysk.
A two-story mansion in the style of classical eclecticism was built for the Bogarsukov family on Gymnazicheskaya Street in Ekaterinodar. Now the Museum named after E. D. Felitsyn is located in this building.
Nikita Bogarsukov became famous in Kuban as a patron of the arts as well. He helped the poor, donated money to the Dormition of the Mother of God Church in Ekaterinodar, and used his own income to build an Armenian church in Novorossiysk.
