In 1940 the People’s Commissariat for Defense introduced uniforms and insignia for generals and marshals of the USSR. In 1943, the Commissariat’s order also introduced a special type of papakha as a winter headwear for colonels of all branches of the armed forces, replacing the hat with earflaps.
The exhibition displays the uniform of Major-General I. Z. Pashkov (1897 –1981). Ivan Pashkov was born on October 21, 1897 in a peasant family in Kaplino village. In 1915 he graduated from the teacher’s school in Kaplino village and passed the exam for the title of a people’s teacher. In 1916 Ivan Pashkov was conscripted into the army and sent to Zhytomyr Warrant Officer School, after which he went to the front. Pashkov fought in the 38th Siberian Rifle Regiment at the Romanian front. In 1931 Pashkov graduated from the “Vystrel” command courses — the Higher officer shooting and tactical courses — and served successively as chief of staff of the regiment and headquarters of the division. In 1936 Ivan Zakharovich completed the extra-mural course at the Frunze Military Academy and was sent to guard the Far Eastern borders of our country. In April 1941 Colonel Pashkov was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of Infantry Corps in the Far East. Since May 1942 he was Chief of Staff of the corps, division commander, corps commander. In December, 1942 Pashkov was promoted to the rank of major-general. He commanded the 5th Separate Infantry Corps during the war with Japan. The General’s battle prowess became particularly distinctive here. In most arduous conditions the Corps in 25 days crossed the Ussuri River, fought through the woods and swampy terrain along 500 km and joined the units of the 1st Far Eastern Front. This was reported by the Soviet Information Bureau and the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, published in the newspaper “Pravda” on August 24, 1945.
When the Great Patriotic War ended, Ivan Zakharovich continued to serve in the army, commanding the illustrious Taman Red Banner Order of Suvorov Guards Rifle Division, and then the corps stationed in Kalinin. In 1953 he was retired in the reserve. The Major-General Ivan Pashkov was awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner and many medals for his services to the Fatherland.
