Uniform of a common soldier
#8
This exhibit item of the museum is a restoration of a common soldier’s uniform of Biisk defense battalion that was quartered in the fortress early in XIX century. For an exact description of the uniform and relevant drawings see the major work of the Russian military historian Alexander Viscovatov, Historical Description of Military Apparel and Arms of the Russian Troops.

31 August 1771, a company of Biisk battalion became the first military post of the rebuilt Kuznetsk fortress. Biisk border defense battalion was established for the service at Kolyvano-Kuznetsk fortified line. It consisted of five combat and one invalid companies. It was staffed with officers and lower ranks of various army regiments and defense battalions.

Military personnel of Biisk battalion numbered 804 people. : one field officer, 19 company officers, 56 non-commissioned officers and corporals, 660 enlisted persons, 6 flautists, 12 бdrummers, 21 non-combatants and 29 officers’ servants. During the reign of Emperor Paul I, the army troops got the names of their supervisors instead of geographic names. This is why, on 9 January 1797, Biisk battalion was reformed into Major General Bogdanov 3rd Defense Battalion. The authorized uniform strength also increased: commandant in chief (fortress governor, in the rank of general or field officer), two field officers, 25 company officers, 59 non-commissioned officers, 834 enlisted persons, two flautists, 19 drummers, 26 non-combatants and 39 officers’ servants.

Between 4 March 1800 and 3 July1801, the battalion was part of Major General Retunnen’s Defense Battalion regiment. After separation from the regiment, the battalion again got the name of Biisk. As authorized for a field defense battalion, it consisted of four companies with 866 people of military staff. In April 1826, the battalion was transferred to Presnogorkovskaya and Presnenskaya fortresses and was consequently renamed into Presnogorkovsky defense battalion. In the same year the company of former Biisk battalion left Kuznetsk fortress.

Military jackets in Russia and in other countries appeared before any other types of uniform. Major requirements for them to meet were their functional convenience, uniformity for relevant service arms and branches, and distinct difference from armies of other countries.

Military uniform in Russia has always been treated with respect and love. The uniform reminded of combat heroism, honour and military comradeship. Military uniform was considered good-looking and attractive. The military uniform fashion was prescribed by orders, directives, rules and special regulatory acts. The uniform of the Russian Army preserves certain accessories of the military uniform of the Russian Empire, such as shoulder straps, high boots, long coat with gorget patches.
