Flag of the Tatar ASSR (Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic). 1937. The red sheet is supplemented with inscriptions in the Latin script.
The Museum of the History of Tatar Statehood and the Republic of Tatarstan contains a copy of the official flag of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of 1937.
The first official symbols of the regions did not differ from the state coat of arms and flag, except that the designations of the autonomy itself were added to them. The flag of the RSFSR presented itself as a red, rectangular sheet with a gold hammer and sickle and a red five-pointed star in the upper corner. The composition was framed by a golden border. The proportion of the flag’s width to its length is 1:2.
According to the TASSR Constitution of 1937, the flag of the republic was the State flag of the RSFSR with the only difference that the inscriptions “R.S.F.S.R.” and “Tatar A.S.S.R.” were also written in the Tatar. The red colour of the flag symbolized the heroic struggle of the Soviet people to build socialism and communism. The letters on the front flag were gold, but in everyday life they were often replaced with yellow ones.
In 1928, in Tatarstan, as in many other Turkic-speaking autonomous republics, the Tatar language was officially translated into an alphabet based on Latin (Yanalif) instead of Arabic. Until 1939, all official paperwork in the national language was carried out using the Latin alphabet. Therefore, the inscriptions in the Tatar in the official symbols of the republic were made in the Latin alphabet. For example, “R.S.F.S.R.”, “TATARSTAN A.S.S.R.”, “BARLЬQ ILLЂRNEN PROLETARILARЬ, BERLЂŞEGEZ!”, which means “Workers of all countries, unite!”
In 1939, a new reform of the Tatar alphabet was carried out — it was based on the Cyrillic alphabet. Latin inscriptions were removed from the official symbols of the TASSR. According to the new edition of the Constitution of 1946, only Tatar inscription in Cyrillic — “TATARSTAN A.S.S.R.” was left on the flag under the inscription “R.S.F.S.R.”, and also “BARLYK ILLIRNE PROLETARIILARY, BERL”SHEGEZ! ” — on the coat of arms.
The official flags were used in state institutions of the republic, during festive events and award ceremonies. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the flag of Tatarstan became a rectangular tricolour of green, white and red stripes.
