Hybrid violet is a perennial herbaceous plant. It is a hybrid of dog violet (Viola canina) and sand violet (Viola fimbriatula). There is a legend that goes that a tree nymph was turned into this flower. Another legend involves several mortals who dared spy on the goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite, and Zeus turned the nosy men into the beautiful flowers that resemble the shape of a big eye by their shape.

Violets are spread almost everywhere in Russia. They grow on sunny meadows, he edges of mingled woods, in scrubs, fields, ravines, as well as on hill and road sides. As many other violet species, hybrid violet prefers sandy soil.

The plant is 5 to 15 cm tall. It has a short bushy root. One stem bears several flowers, one on each long stalk. The five-petal flowers are largely light-blue.
The plant usually breaks into blossom in May or early June and may blossom again in late summer. When its fruit ripens, it cracks open to broadcast the seeds in the range of up to one meter around itself. Those are then picked up by ants who carry them away covering tremendous territories.

Salicylic acid is one of the useful elements contained in this plant contains. It is used in esthetic medicine in the form of extract. In alternative folk medicine, the herby parts and root of the plant find use due to their content of ether oil and anthocyans. The same substances are contained in pomegranate, cranberry, cherry, plum, and other berries. The flower has wide culinary usage for desserts: the petals are mixed into sugar to give it a nice fragrant touch. Elizabeth of Bavaria, Empress of Austria, was known to be a great fan of violet-based desserts, and ‘sugared violet’ is now sold in European confectioneries.

Some violet species are planted as decorative plants. Landscape designers favor it as an element of flower beds.

Many species are known under a common name of pansy. Some are bred for the sake of their fragrant flowers, others are loved for their bright color palette. All in all there are some 400 species of violets and more than 1000 varieties.
