The candleholders from the porcelain set for the ladies’ dressing table belonged to Yelena Sergeevna, Mikhail Bulgakov’s third wife. These candleholders are from the Bulgakovs’ apartment in Nashchokinsky lane. The couple moved there from Bolshaya Pirogovskaya in February 1934. Number 3 in Nashchokinsky lane (Furmanov Street in Bulgakov’s time) was called the “writer’s extension”. The housing and construction cooperative partnership “Soviet Writer” reconstructed two old mansions, uniting them, and added storeys.

Wonderful house, I swear! There are writers living above and below, behind, and in front, as well as on the side. I pray to God that the house stands indestructible. True, we have a chill, something is wrong in the lavatory and the tank leaks on the floor, and there will probably be some other malfunctions, but nevertheless I’m happy. As long as the house stands!

We had a small circle of friends, there were artists — Vladimir Vladimirovich Dmitriev, Pyotr Vladimirovich Williams, Boris Robertovich Erdman (the playwright’s brother). There was a Bolshoi Theater conductor Melik-Pashaev and there was the director of the Bolshoi Theater Yakov Leontievich Leontiev, all of them with their families, of course, with their wives. And my sister Olga Sergeevna Bokshanskaya, the secretary of the Art Theater, came with her husband Kaluzhsky, several actors of the Art Theater: Konsky, Yanshin, Raevsky, Pilyavskaya. It was a small circle for a man like Mikhail Afanasyevich, but they gathered with us almost every day…
