Tikhon Khrennikov received his diploma for music to the film ‘Two Comrades’ in 2001, in the town of Gatchina. Since 1995, the Film Festival ‘Literature and Cinema’ has been held there on an annual basis, in which Russian and foreign films-adaptations or films based on literary works, take part.
The film ‘Two Comrades’ is based on the play issued by the writer Vladimir Voinovich, the author of ‘The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin’ and the text of the song ‘On the Dusty Paths of Distant Planets’. The film was directed by Valery Pendrakovsky, who directed the films ‘Running on the Waves’, ‘Full Breathing’, ‘I’m Free, I’m Nobody’s’. The play took place in the 1950s, but the director moved it to the mid-1960s.
The specifics of Pendrakovsky’s works is that he always paid great attention to sound and carefully selected the musical accompaniment to the plot and mood of the films. Therefore, he turned to the composer Khrennikov, the author of soundtracks for many famous films. For example, to ‘Hussar Ballad’, ‘True Friends’ and ‘Ruslan and Lyudmila’. The musician said that he agreed to work on ‘Two Comrades’ because he was attracted by the immersion into the atmosphere of the time: the time of the ‘thaw’, style hunters in drainpipe trousers, jazz ‘on the ribs’, the first hucksters, and other symbols of the era.
The film is set in a small provincial town. This is a story about the adventures of two childhood friends in the last summer before being drafted into the army. They pass the time merrily with dancing, wine and girls. Not without clashes with the police, and family conflicts with parents. As a result, after many adventures, they choose the path of life.
The main roles in the film were played by actors Yuri Moseichuk and Mikhail Tarabukin. Iya Savvina, Irina Rozanova, Alexey Panin and Viktor Proskurin also starred in it. The title song of the film ‘It was so long ago’ on the verses of Vladimir Voinovich was performed by the group ‘Doctor Watson’.
At the ‘Literature and Cinema’ Film Festival, ‘Two Comrades’ won the reader’s jury prize, and the composer Khrennikov was awarded a Diploma for music to the film.
