Tikhon Khrennikov was born in 1913 in Yelets. At the age of 16, he entered the Gnessin Musical College and moved to Moscow, but he always remembered fondly his hometown.
Khrennikov said: ‘Yelets is the most sacred place for me on earth, ” he said more than once. “Earlier in my youth, and now the most pleasant thing for me is to come to Yelets and walk along its streets. The town atmosphere and everything that I was brought up on, that musical culture of the Russian province — it is all in my music…”
In 2000, in the house where the composer grew up, T.N. Khrennikov House-museum was established. The exhibition includes personal belongings, photographs of the family, music scores and gifts from fans. The house has retained its historical layout, with a few exceptions: instead of a storage closet, a chamber concert hall was added.
