Vera Krasko, a doll artist, was born on May 3, 1958, in the village of Nikolayevka in Tuimazinsky district of Bashkortostan. She graduated from the Ufa State Petroleum Technological University and worked for many years in the service center for the repair of drilling and oil-field equipment of OAO ‘Gazpromneft’ as the leading engineer of the production department.

Vera Anatolievna told the story how she first became interested in handicrafts in an interview,

I remember quite well, how I, a little girl, was asking grandma: Teach me…” I remember the first tears over a ball of yarn, which was supposed to be a scarf, but nothing worked out. And then my Dad’s pride when I gave him a sweater knit with my own hands.

She began to be seriously involved in decorative and applied art after she first visited the “Gamayun” Museum Center workshop classes in 2013.

Vera Krasnoko became familiar with the traditional techniques of making a rag doll all by herself. As time went by, her skills reached a very high level, and in 2016 her solo exhibition “Oh, This Maslenitsa!” (Maslenitsa is a folk holiday celebrated during the last week before Great Lent) took place in the museum.

The doll “Girl” is included in the series “Childhood” from the project “Any Time is a Blessing”, which is dedicated to different periods of human life. A “Boy” doll in a blue Russian national shirt and with a toy horse is paired with the “Girl” doll.

The girl wears casual clothes, common for the Russian village of the 19th century. It consists of a satin shirt and a bright sundress, and there are small bast shoes on her feet. A contrasting pattern of a large white polka dot against a red background is combined with a small red dot on a white shirt and a green flower pattern that imitates embroidery. These patterns were often used by peasant girls to decorate their clothes when they learned handicrafts from older women in the family.

A rag doll in the hands of a girl told about her age. She is just getting to know the world through the game and learning to live in it.

However, even as a child, every peasant girl could not only take care of younger siblings, but also make dolls, fix clothes, embroider, run the house and do farm work. She could work in the garden, take care of livestock and poultry.
