Dmitry Neverovsky joined military service in 1786 as a soldier in the Life Guards Semyonovsky Regiment. He participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1791 and in the Polish campaign of 1792 and 1794. He received the Gold Cross for the Praga assault (suburb of Warsaw, today its district). For the distinguished conduct in the battles the young man was promoted twice.

In 1803, Neverovsky was made a colonel and appointed Commander of the 1st Marine Regiment, and in 1804 he became a major general. In 1807 he was appointed Chief of the Pavlovsky Grenadier Regiment.

At the end of 1811, the 40-year-old major general was instructed to form a new infantry division in Moscow under number 27. Four months later, the division was formed and trained. Ivan Gudovich, an experienced field marshal, amazed at how quickly the recruits were transformed to soldiers, called Neverovsky’s division “the Moscow Guard”.

On June 22, 1812, the regiments of the 27th division joined on the march with the units of the 2nd Western Army. The division went through difficult trials in the Battles of Krasny and Smolensk. On August 24, on the eve of the Battle of Borodino, Neverovsky’s regiments valiantly defended the Shevardino Redoubt and the Bagration flèches — artillery fortifications near the village of Semyonovskoye. The general was contused in the chest and left side, and the division suffered heavy losses.

Despite this, on August 26 the division was again at the center of the Russian positions. By the end of the battle of Borodino, almost all the officers of the ‘Moscow Guard’ were killed or wounded. Only a small part of the lower ranks remained in the ranks. At the end of 1812, the 27th division, which suffered the greatest losses in the war, was left to rest and reinforce. For the distinguished conduct in the Battle of Borodino, Neverovsky was promoted to lieutenant general.

In 1813, Neverovsky participated in the European campaign, in the Battle of the Katzbach and the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. In the latter, he was seriously injured and on October 21 he passed away.

The portrait of the lieutenant general was created in the studio of English artist George Dawe in the 1820s after an unknown prototype. The portrait became part of the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace along with images of more than three hundred other heroes of the 1812 Patriotic War. The Museum-Panorama ‘Battle of Borodino’ holds a copy of Neverovsky’s portrait, created in 1964.
