Mammoth skull
Occipital bone, with a strongly prominent median vertical muscular crest. The dark bones are completely fused together. Two occipital ridges are formed on the top of the tile box. There are two eye sockets on the skull, with powerful frontal processes above them. The temporal bones are well preserved. The zygomatic processes of the temporal bone are almost completely preserved, their articular surface appears, as in all ruminants, convex, with an axis almost perpendicular to the axis of the skull.
In the Late Paleolithic era (40-10 thousand years ago) in Siberia there was the last glaciation. Glaciers did not completely cover our region. The part of the region that was not covered by a glacial shell was a cold, arid steppe and tundra. The edge of the tundra passed south of modern Krasnoyarsk. The animal world was diverse and rich: mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, reindeer, musk oxen, wild horses.
People of Paleolithic sites conducted round-up hunting of large animals, extracted mammoth and deer meat.
The mammoth is the largest mammal that has been hunted. It was widespread in the region, inhabiting open landscapes. The length of mammoth tusks sometimes reached more than 4 meters, and the weight of a pair of tusks was 300 kilograms. The mammoth’s body was covered with thick reddish-brown hair, especially long on the sides. The live weight of the mammoth reached up to 5 tons. The skin and bones of the mammoth were used for the construction of dwellings.
At the turn of 12-11 thousand years ago, climate change occurred. Glaciers began to melt and retreat to the north and into mountain valleys. The tundra was moving to the north. Coniferous and deciduous forests began to occupy large spaces. Mammoths gradually disappeared.
