Artist Haris Yakupov is a major figure in the art of painting of Tatarstan of the post-war period. Having returned from the front, he started uniting veteran-artists and in 1951 he was elected Chairman of the Artists’ Union of the Republic. He headed the creative art studio at the Kazan Academy of Arts from 1976.
Yakupov combined his own creative work and teaching with his activities on supervising the construction of workshops and exhibition centers. He was the only artist of Tatarstan who was awarded the honored title of People’s Artist of the USSR. In his creative work great attention was given to the important for the Republic subject-construction of the Kama vehicle factory, the KAMAZ, in Naberezhnye Chelny. The artist was always interested in the constructive labor of people. In the 1970s, three art groups were established in the Artists’ Union and two of them the Oil and the KAMAZ were headed by Haris Yakupov. He visited the towns of Almetyevsk and Naberezhnye Chelny together with the artists’ groups and it was there that he made sketches for his pictures Gold of Tatarstan and Beauties of Chelny..
