The chalice was manufactured early in the 20th century. The metal surface carries the inlaid sacred writings from Koran. It is designed for drinking water from Zam-Zam (Zemzem) water source in Mecca, 21 km away from Kaaba, under the Haram Mosque (the Great Mosque) square. Such chalice always was the best gift from a pilgrim having returned home after the Hajj.
Zam-Zam is a sacred source for all the Moslems. The well diameter is 2.5 metres, and the depth is 30 metres. Water flows out of three sources and fills a small basin without spreading out across the valley. It is believed, that water from that source has a pleasant taste and miraculous properties. It never gets bad; it is capable of healing from various diseases and of satisfying hunger. Every pilgrim needs to wash his face in Zam-Zam and drink the water from the source to the full.
Scientists took samples of water under the Haram Mosque and studied it thoroughly. According to the outcomes of the test, Zam-Zam water contains high concentration of bicarbonates (magnesium and calcium salts), which make it clean and germicide. In addition, this water contains manganese, iron, copper, sulphates and chlorides.
The origin of the source, which is 18 metres from the Black Stone, is linked with two Islamic prophets – Ismail and Ibrahim. The legend says that Ibrahim took his wife and son to the desert leaving them exactly where Kaaba currently stands. Nothing was there at that time: no sources, no houses, and no people. Ibrahim gave his wife a little bag with dates and a vessel with water. When Hagar asked her husband why he was leaving his wife and his son, he answered: ‘That was the will of the Lord’.
Hagar breastfed her son and she herself ate dates and drank water Ibrahim had given her. When the water finished, Hangar went to search for a source between the hills al-Marwa and as-Safa. Several time she went from one side of the valley to another appealing to the Lord for help. Suddenly, the voice of the Lord came confirming there was water. Indeed, when the woman returned to her son, she discovered a source of clean water springing from the sand.
Later Ibrahim came back to this place and built Kaaba based on Allah’s plan and instructions. The Sacred Haram Mosque was erected above the source. According to the legend, Allah’s prophets drank water from this source, and Mohammed even asked to bring sufficient reserves of this water to Medina.
The true believer drinks and cannot get enough of Zam-Zam water, and a hypocrite does not drink to the full. Every person having drunk water from this source gets all he asks for. If his intentions are candid, the needs of the person having drunk from the source will be made up.
