In 2018 году visitors of the exhibition ‘Historical Belozersk’ were presented the restored carved holy gates of the 18th century. Holy gates are the main gate of the iconostasis in the church. The gate was transferred to the museum by the (a) local religious organization ‘Orthodox Parish of the Belozersk Temple of the Assumption of the Mother of God in Vologda Oblast of the Cherepovets Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate)’ in 2012. Restoration works were carried out in 2017 by the Vologda branch of the Grabar Art Conservation Center.

Holy Gates are the main gates of the iconostasis in a church. The gates have chafed spots, loss of paintwork layer, loss of levkas down to the base, fragments of carving have been lost, including the central figure of Jesus Christ. The presented gates depict the scene of the Last Supper, a New Testament biblical event from the last days of Jesus Christ’s life. At a secret party, the Eucharist Sacrament was established, or communion, when the apostles tasted bread and wine as blood and flesh of Christ.
Presumably the Holy Gates come from the church of Most Merciful Savior of Belozersk. This is proved by a Sergey ProkUdin-GOrsky photograph taken inside this church in 1909. The researchers assume that these are the gates captured by the photo.
The Church of the Most Merciful Savior is one of the first stone temples in the city, built in the early 18th century. It is known that even before the 17th century there existed St Andrews Monastery in the same spot. During the Polish-Lithuanian invasion in 1612, the monastery was completely burned down. The temple was built in the early 18th century, when stone temples were erected everywhere instead of wooden temples.
This church was built in 1723 and consecrated in the name of the Most Merciful Savior. The locals called it “Saviour at the foot of the hill”. After the Belozersk canal was completed the church had another unofficial name, more widespread currently: “Saviour on the canal”. This temple is considered one of the most beautiful of the preserved ones. Above the elongated windows of the second one, framed with rolled casing molding with the sharp top, there is a belt of Dutch tile. The walls are decorated with two tiers of special architectural elements – corbel arch checker-wise and a cornice with Belozersk “saw” pattern – a protruding corner of bricks. The vaults of the temple inside were decorated by a lush baroque molding. The Dutch tiles, a belt covering the temple, have a relief floral ornamentation.
In the Soviet times the temple was closed, the building was used for school workshops and the gym. The church is now transferred to the Cherepovets diocese.
