The iconostasis separating the altar from the other areas in the church has always been an important element in Russian church architecture. In general, in the décor of iconostases, special attention was always paid to the Holy Doors, which have a significant symbolic meaning.
During repairs and renovations of churches, the Holy Doors, unlike many other elements of the iconostases, have often been preserved or relocated to other churches due to their significance.
There is no strict set of rules regarding the images that can be depicted on the Holy Doors, but artists typically adhere to certain traditional motifs when creating iconostases. Most commonly, they depict the scene of the Annunciation, which marks the beginning of all New Testament events.
These Holy Doors of the mid-18th century
were created under the influence of the Baroque. At the junction of the two
doors, the Virgin Mary is depicted sitting on a throne, Her arms crossed over
Her chest. This gesture signifies humility and joy, which the Virgin Mary
expressed in the words,
