Konstantin Alexeevich Korovin was a painter, set designer, teacher, and writer.

The uniqueness of Konstantin Korovin’s talent lies in the versatility of his artistic interests. While creating easel paintings, he was simultaneously attracted to work in the field of monumental, decorative and applied art.

A significant page in the artist’s biography is represented by his pedagogical work. The talent of the artist, his absolute taste, the skill of the colorist, the breadth of artistic views and personal charm — all this established his authority among students and attracted them to his studio.

I studied in Konstantin Korovin’s class at the School of Painting for two years and had the opportunity to get to know him better by being in direct contact with him. He was a man of extraordinary talent in all fields of art, a master of painting, endowed with an exceptional eye, a funny guy, an Epicurean… He influenced, in terms of pictorial trends, even such artists as Serov and Levitan. They loved his talent as a painter and turned to this side of his personality.
The artist Boris Ioganson once said about Konstantin Korovin

The art of Konstantin Korovin is the most pronounced example of Russian Impressionism. Painting for him is a “feast for the eye”. The still life “Bouquet” is exemplary in this regard: it is like a colorful improvisation created in a free manner of painting, with a bright, juicy color scheme. The higher perspective makes it possible to convey the sunlight and its play, while capturing all the highlights and shadows. With dense, broad brushstrokes, the artist sculpts the shape of petals and the sparkles on water in the glass vessel.

Contemporaries called Korovin the “Mozart of Painting” for the speed with which he worked and bright color combinations. A bouquet of flowers in a simple glass jar is painted with the famous peculiar “Korovin’s brushstroke”, sometimes wide and dense, then transparent; like the artist’s eye, it touches each petal, penetrates into it. The canvas sparkles with gems. All this apparent chaos of colors exists only up close: it is worth retreating from the canvas — it instantly turns into a beautiful harmony of blooming fresh flowers.

The artworks of Korovin, the last classic of Russian pre-revolutionary painting, will always bring joy to people.
