In the 1960s, headlines about the new Soviet Baku in the village of Shaim were in every newspaper. Prominent academicians drew conclusions about the advantage of high-quality Shaim oil over that produced in the Ural-Volga regions.
The Shaim oil region is located in the West Siberian Plain, above 60 degrees north latitude. When the development of the region started, the territory was sparsely populated and the locals could not be involved in the construction and development of oil fields.
In the summer of 1956, a seismic survey was carried out. The report after this expedition mentioned the word “Shaim” for the first time. A year later, an expendable well was drilled. Shallow drilling confirmed that this region was of interest. Then the bed of the Konda River was explored.
In the winter of 1958, a group led by Viktor Abramovich Gershanik went to the Shaim taiga region to conduct a detailed seismic survey. Already in 1959, the Shaim drilling party of the Khanty-Mansi geological expedition drilled well No. 2 on the banks of the Konda River and received a small influx of oil — one and a half tons per day.
The development of the region was going on. In January 1960, the Shaim oil and gas exploratory expedition was organized — it was located in the village of Chantyrya. In July of the same year, the expedition, led by Ivan Fyodorovich Morozov, moved to the outskirts of the village of Uray.
Well No. 6 was drilled on the right bank of the Konda River — it was to be 1,600 meters deep. It was drilled by the crew led by Semyon Nikitich Urusov (1926–1991). It included the drillers V.D. Shidlovsky, N.V. Raspopov, N.N. Urusov, S.N. Kutilov, V.V. Teterevnikov, the driller’s assistants P.I. Bukharin, V.M. Kolmakov, the senior diesel engineers I.V. Usoltsev, R.M. Galiullin, the locksmith I.P. Shestakov and others.
This legendary crew produced the first industrial oil in Western Siberia. Almost every year it achieved the rate of penetration in exploratory drilling that was highest in the USSR. The team was awarded the title of “The Best Drilling Crew of the USSR Ministry of Geology”. Semyon Nikitich Urusov later received the title of Hero of Socialist Labor. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
