Dmitrov Porcelain Factory of M. S. Kuznetsov’s Partnership
Goblet with lid
#7
The porcelain goblet with a lid made in Russia in the early 20th century. It has a cylindrical shape and tapers slightly upward. Its bowl, the main part, ends in a stable leg with embossed decorative bands and has a loop-shaped golden handle. The goblet is closed with a lid, painted pink, like the rest of the item.
#15
On the bowl of the goblet, there is an oval white medallion with the depiction of a rural landscape: a house with a red roof and trees against the background of mountains and the sky. The edges of the medallion are fringed with a golden geometric ornament. On both sides of it, the goblet is painted with a floral pattern, also golden. The same picture is repeated on the lid. There is a golden layer around its border as well.
#16
On the bottom of the goblet, you can see a blue overglaze stamp, which consists of an image of a two-headed eagle with a scepter and orb, the inscriptions “M. S. Kuznetsov”s Partnership” and “D.F.” (Dmitrov Factory).
#17
The Dmitrov Porcelain Factory was founded by the English merchant Franz Gardner in 1766. The facility was located in the Verbilki village of the Dmitrov District, in the Moscow Governorate. After Gardner’s death, the plant was inherited by his descendants, and in 1892, it was bought by the industrialist Matvey Kuznetsov. After the 1917 revolution, the plant was nationalized, and it became state property.
#18
Kuznetsov’s factory produced tableware and teaware, sculptures, vases and other porcelain products. They were decorated with hand painting, gilding, images were drawn using stencils. In 1901, the factory had more than 900 employees.
#19
Every year the factories of M.S. Kuznetsov’s Partnership manufactured products for more than 7,000 roubles, which accounted for two-thirds of the total production of this industry in Russia. Kuznetsov’s plant was famous not only for its porcelain tableware and teaware but also for its terracotta figurines, vases, stove tiles hand-painted in the Old Russian style. Matvey Kuznetsov had 15 permanent stores in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Odesa, Kharkiv, Warsaw; he traded at twelve Russian fairs, as well as in Persia, Turkey, and in the Balkans.
