The type of iconographic depiction of the Yugskaya Theotokos is Hodigitria (She who points the Way’ and it coincides completely with the Theotokos of Tikhvin. On the icon the Mother of God is depicted holding the Child Jesus at her side. Jesus sits with his feet crossed and his right foot seen out of the robe.
According to the legend, in 1615, Dorophey, a novice of the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery, had a vision. The Theotokos told him to go with her image to the Yug River, which flowed not far from the Rybnaya settlement (the future town of Rybinsk). The novice took one of the monastery icons and started out. On the river he founded the monastery Yugskaya Desert of St Dorophey. In this place the icon called Yugskaya stayed up to the October Revolution. In 1920s, a children commune was planned to be located in the monastery and personnel of the museum started to remove icons and church objects. However, the miraculous image of the Theotokos was not found.
