The icon from the collection of the Yaroslavl Museum Reserve is a reproduction of the famous Vladimir image, which is considered miraculous. The artist supplemented it with 18 stamps - miniature drawings, each dedicated to a particular plot. The image belongs to the iconographic type, which is called Tenderness in the Russian literature: on icons of that type Christ is depicted clinging to the Mother of God, and the Virgin Mary Herself - with a softer than usual, expression. The image is painted in a golden-ochre color scheme, making the image of the Mother of God with the Infant especially warm. Clothes of the Mother of God are richly decorated with gold. The decorative element - the patterned frame around the central image - has been known in Yaroslavl icons since the 16th century.

Information about the first Vladimir image is found in the chronicles of the 12th century. According to the sources, it was brought from Byzantium to Kiev as a gift to the Kiev prince. The image was kept in a convent in Vyshgorod; in the middle of the 12th century Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky moved the icon to a place near the city of Vladimir. There it became famous as miraculous and became known as Vladimir image.

At the end of the 14th century the image of the Mother of the God was brought to Moscow to be prayed to for patronage: the city dwellers turned to the miraculous icon with prayers for salvation from the invasion of the conqueror Temir-Aksak (Tamerlane). Later the icon was returned back to Vladimir. But since the end of the 15th century the image has been permanently kept in Moscow, and later the icon of Vladimir image of the Mother of God became the patroness of the capital. In different cities of the country icon painters created many reproductions of the image. Today the ancient icon of the 12th century is located in the State Tretyakov Gallery.

The Yaroslavl icon was created in the middle of the 17th century. It was kept in the church of John Chrysostom in Corovniky, in the iconostasis of the central temple. The miniatures that surround the image of the Mother of God and the Infant show the history of the image. One of them represents the story of how evangelist Luke painted the icon, how it was brought to Kiev, and miracles attributed to it. Inscriptions near each miniature in the fields explain the images.

The miniatures carefully convey the smallest details. Miniature drawings are harmoniously combined with the image of the Mother of God: if you look at the icon from a distance, they merge together and form a multi-colored picturesque frame around the central part.
