The following centenary was the heyday of Yaroslavl’s cultural life. Merchants’ contributions funded the construction of stone churches for which artists painted new icons and made iconostases. During that period, the Yaroslavl icon painting school emerged and soon became one of the nation’s best-known art centres.

The exhibition includes icons of that period, with a characteristic colour range and finely handled details, and later specimens whose style was influenced by the Baroque age and its fanciful and exquisite decor.
