The Gutenberg Bible is the first large-format printed book in the history of humankind, which signifies the adoption of a new technology and symbolises the start of a new era.
Johannes Gutenberg printed 1282 pages in Latin, with the text arranged in two columns in Textura type - a Gothic font - and bound as two volumes. Each column consists of 42 lines, that is why, it is also known as the ‘42-line Bible’. The edition was modelled after the ‘Giant Bible’ (75×40 cm), i.e., a manuscript produced in Mainz circa 1452, now in possession of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Like all the Gutenberg editions, the Bible does not have a publication date, but it is believed to have been printed in 1454-1455 and no later than 1456.
